    Match day Experience

    It was the first league game of the season for Welling United and the sun certainly came out for the occasion. With the Premier League yet to get started and local professional clubs only playing in the 1st round of the Carabao Cup (the League Cup), Welling United enjoy a bumper crowd for the first home game of the season. With the way last season went you could understand the apprehension of some fans returning this year but the end of season form and positive signings over the summer, the mood was positive down at PVR.

    Unlike The Late Show with American host Jimmy Fallon, this is a late show that the Welling fans would have enjoyed watching. With late goals from left-back Chris Arthur (81) and the new sign announced on the day Nahum Melvin-Lambert (90+2).

    On a sunny August afternoon, Welling United and Whitehawk took to the field for the first time this season in the Isthmian Premier Divsion. It was a tight affair in the first half, with both teams having a number of half chances, most notably 

    Murphy lifting a long pass over the keeper but also unfortunately over the bar for the Hawks. Wellings best chances in the first half came with in moments of each other when Anyadike crossed the ball for Azeez, who saw his effort saved by the keeper and moments later Smith saw his effort from a tight angle meet the same fate. Chris Arthur saw a long-range effort whistle wide of the post before the half-time whistle.

    The second half became more and more cagey, with niether team really creating a cutting edge chance, it looked like it was going to need a moment of magic or a mistake to win the game, and in the end it was a bit of both, when in 81st minute Wings left-back Arthur struck the ball cleanly from 30 yards which managed to squeeze under the Hawks keepers body (who may have been unsighted). Moments later, Welling put the icing on the cake when new signing Melvin-Lambert fired in from clase range after a magnificent bit of skill from Kaan Bennett to set it up.

    Welling United have won their league opener for only the second time on the last 8 seasons and will be hoping this is a sign of a much more positive season after a disappointing couple of years.

    This is going to be a casual place where I report on my experiences at the football, as well as share my opinions on the Premier League and other big stories from England and the rest of the continent.

    As a Welling United season ticket holder, the vast majority of the games I report on will be non-league games. However, over the course of the season and in the years that follow, I hope to visit a range of different grounds around the country and potentially even across the continent, sharing my unique experiences from the games, along with a mini match report in my own casual reporting style.

    Reporting on the games I attend won’t be the only content I post here. I’ll also share my opinions on the Premier League, including weekly gameweek reviews, predictions, ones to watch, and plenty more, all in my own casual style.
